The City of Aurora.
The second largest city in Illinois, with a population of a quarter of a million people, if you include the unincorporated township. A city that big, you know there's more than a small supernatural presence there. Even if it's dwarfed by the size of Chicago, and the amount of paranormal shenanigans that Wizard and Warden of the White Council Harry Dresden, P.I. gets up to and involved in, there's still a lot going on.
There's the Red Court, with Baroness Lucretia Lorenzo lusting for enough power to prove herself to the Red King by killing Harry Dresden.
There is also the White Court; Armand Skavis feeds on the despair of the ghettoes and those who lose their last dollars at the casino, trying to wrest power from the Baroness and make the White Court the dominant vampire power in the city.
Both Courts of the Fae are present in Aurora, with a great many WyldeFae frequenting Phillips Park, particularly the sunken flower garden. Fae Nobles from Summer and Winter have been seen on occasion, but it's almost certain they keep watch even when they themselves are not visible.
There's still a gang problem in Aurora, even if it's better than it was in the late 80s and early 90s, but the worst is the Lost Lobos, a pack of lycanthropes who raise hell once a month, and generally escalate gang violence whenever they can provoke an opportunity.
Aside from the supernatural forces, and the disorganized street gangs, there is also one Luther Washington, a "businessman" who specializes in street drugs, carefully avoiding stepping on the White Court's toes with too much skin trade vice, and skirting the edges of offending the Red Court by steering clear of narcotics that mimic their saliva too closely. He carefully controls the drugflow into and through the city, allowing the gangs to maintain their sense of control as it reaches their turfs, laundering his money through heavy attendance at the Casino.
So, what does it mean when a local high-price sculptor has begun throwing money around, making his name known outside of just the art and party circles? More importantly, what does it mean when he throws a party in his downtown penthouse, inviting not only the vampire nobles, but Luther Washington and a certain "Gentleman" Johnny from the big city to his soiree, as well?
The local non-vanillas are going to have to find out and stop it, before it's too late.
..And the question of why Aurora somehow never seems to draw Harry Dresden's attention might come up as well. It might have something to do with the fact that it's incredibly difficult to establish a decent threshold in the city limits, and almost impossible to cross over to the Nevernever, almost like Aurora doesn't have a reflection on the other side...
Freely Held, Faeriely Given is a Dresden Files Roleplaying Game adventure, using the streamlined rules of FATE Accelerated (which is known as FAE, amusingly enough.) The Players will be playing original characters with backstories basing them in Aurora, not any characters from the Dresden Files books (sorry.) Knowledge of the Dresden-verse will certainly be useful, but it is not strictly required, thanks to the nearly crunch-free ruleset of FATE Accelerated. The Dresden Files RPG books will be on hand for reference, but this will be for flavor, rather than mechanical rules details.
Just bring your best Dresden-esque attitude (and maybe puns,) and you'll have a blast.
